New Year’s Resolution
I almost feel, in some ways, that I have expended useless energy over the last two years when it comes to discussing the state of swimsuits today. It basically comes down to, and I openly admit it, bitching. I have my reasons and I feel that the sport, which I consider the only other pure sport left, next to Track and Field, is suffering greatly as a result. But that’s my opinion…the data is there but its only data.
There are others who feel as strongly, if not more strongly, as I do and there are those who believe that the new suits are actually GOOD for the sport…vis a vis, the same people that cheer on the Manny Ramirez’ of the world.
Forbes Carlile, one of the premiere coaches of our lifetime, has written an editorial on Swimnews.com which I believe sums it up objectively about as best as anyone could. I don’t think there is anything more really to say on the matter as I feel now like there is nothing worthwhile which can come of arguing about it or debating it. In a struggle which is frighteningly similar to the US Health Care debate, FINA and the suit makers have a giant shitpile to sort through and who knows how long it will take to get to a resolution…probably never.
I don’t aim to become complacent and just let my swimmers wear whatever neoprene nightmare they find on the shelf and claim that they ACTUALLY earned 1st place…we WILL retain strict standards at West Side which conform directly to whatever the FINA ruling is at the time. However, my New Year’s resolution is to basically shut the hell up on the issue and let the money people who know best, decide the future of the sport. I am sure you are much happier as a result.
Happy New Year.
