To a coach the clock is practically an assistant on deck. A swim coach lives and breathes by the time. Splits, intervals, bathroom breaks…everything is measured by the clock.

To the swimmer, the clock is either a best friend or worst enemy. A swimmer already has to do so much math in their head for splits, stroke counts, pulse rates, etc….coaches are not making it any easier.

For the beginning swimmer, or the veteran swimmer who is just to lazy to want to do the math, I have created handy flash cards for practicing the clock as well as a handy “hand” clock for practicing your own scenarios. Feel free to download the cards below and distribute to anyone you want! If you want to contribute scenarios to me I will post them in the next iteration and give you full credit! If you come up with a cool way to use them, let me know! I will post it here. In the next week or so I will be posting a new SET that West Side will be doing with the cards.

Flash Cards 20 Pack Vol. 1 (pdf) (updated at 3:55pm on 3/6/10)I will be adding more in the near future.
Hand Clock (pdf)

Coaches: Cut out the cards, bend them in half and test your swimmers on deck!!
Swimmers: Cut out the cards, bend them in half and test yourself. Draw the hands on the clock as you need to at home!

Good luck!!

-Coach Nate

“When a West Sider wants to get “Coach Nate Points”…well there are only so many things you can do. You can…bring Nate a coffee from Dunkin Donuts…come up with new pushup techniques for the team to try…ask for another 800 fly…BUT…the NUMBER ONE thing that a West Sider can do to earn the MAXIMUM allowable number of Coach Nate Points is to buy me a Painkiller. And not just any Painkiller…a Painkiller from the very source from whence it sprung.

So it was only fitting that I, as Head Coach, returned the favor…
(yes I bought one for my IT department too )
